On November 11, 2006, Ramnarayan alias Lakhan was killed in an encounter at suburban Versova. Ramnarayan’s advocate brother Ramprasad Gupta had approached the Bombay High Court alleging that his brother was shot dead by the police. Sharma was arrested on January 7 by the Special Investigative Team (SIT) formed by the High Court to probe into the case.

Sharma in his plea had said that he has been falsely implicated in the case and that the police is fabricating evidence against him. The prosecution had, however, opposed the bail on the grounds that Sharma is an influential person who would intimidate witnesses and tamper with evidence if released on bail. PTI

“We will consider if this order in its entirety is to be continued or recalled,” a three-judge bench headed by Justice D.K. Jain said, following the plea of BJP MLA Kalubhai Maliwad, who has challenged the order.

Appearing for Maliwad, counsel Ram Jethmalani argued that the complaint by Zakia Jafri, wife of slain Congress leader Ehsaan Jafri, was handed over to the SIT without hearing any of the 63 accused.

Ehsaan Jafri was killed in the riots at the Gulbarg Society and in her complaint, Zakia has accused Modi and 62 others of helping the rioters.

“Every person has a right to be heard. To send all cases of the 63 persons to SIT without hearing them out was against the settled principals of law,” said Jethmalani.

A bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat had passed the controversial order on April 27, 2009 entrusting the SIT to probe the Gulbarg Society massacre in Ahmedabad.

But Modi will still have to appear before the SIT on March 21 as the apex court said it would take up Maliwad’s petition only after April 5.

According to TV reports, two unidentified men moving in a suspicious manner near the ISRO Centre opened fire on the security guards on being interrogated by them.

The guards retaliated by firing at the two men who managed to escape after they came under attack.

There are no reports of any terror angle to this incident.

The duo, Abdul Latif alias Guddu (29) and Riyaz Ali alias Rehan (23), residents of suburban Bandra and Dahisar respectively, were arrested near Matunga railway station in central Mumbai on March 13.

The duo’s instructor called ‘Uncle’, who had directed the two to carry out attacks in select locations, is an Indian and is a real uncle of Latif, the official said. “The ‘Uncle’ is also a close aide of Dawood and had escaped to Pakistan following the 1993 serial bomb blasts triggered by the don, who has links with various terror outfits and ISI in Pakistan,” the official added. Riyaz and Abdul are also close relatives as the latter had married the former’s elder sister eight years ago, he said.

The ‘Uncle’ used to call Latif as and when required to give instructions but in the last two months their interaction over the phone had become more regular, the official said.

The two accused had conducted a recce of three targets, headquarters of public sector company ONGC, Thakkar Mall and Mangaldas Market — and were allegedly planning to carry out attacks which included sabotage and setting them on fire. PTI

A stark display of wads of Rs 1,000 notes stitched in a mammoth garland and estimated to be running into millions of rupees presented to her at the rally gave more ammunition to the opposition to target the BSP supremo. Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav demanded a CBI inquiry into how such a huge amount was openly given in public.

“While Bareilly is on fire, Mayawati government is spending Rs 200 crore of public money on a rally,” SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav said in Lok Sabha. Yadav was joined by leaders of BJP and Congress in demanding Centre’s intervention to restore normalcy in riot-hit Bareilly. Samajwadi Party leader Shivpal Singh Yadav alleged that the cash in the garland was the money of the people amassed through corrupt ways by her ministers.

The ‘Maharally’, held in the shadow of the Opposition attack in Parliament over the communal violence in Bareilly, was utilised by Mayawati as a show of strength where she attacked the Congress for pushing the Women’s Reservation Bill.
