Oracle Parakeet In Singapore Picks Netherlands As Winner

Paul the ‘psychic’ octopus has already got lots of German fans’ laderhosen in a twist by maintaining his 100 per cent World Cup record in predicting their national team would lose to Spain.

Now a parrot named Mani in Singapore has picked Netherlands as the World Cup winner

The 13-year-old parakeet has become a local celebrity in Singapore after its owner, M. Muniyappan, claimed Mani picked all four winners in the World Cup quarter-finals and predicted Spain’s semi-final victory over Germany.

The ‘magical’ bird’s latest forecast saw it flip over one of two white cards to reveal the flag of the Netherlands, who are now being tipped to spring a surprise and claim a first World Cup final win in three attempts over the Euro 2008 winners and bookies’ favourites.

“He’s a special bird,” said 80-year-old Muniyappan, who was born in India and moved to Singapore in 1953.

“People usually want help picking the lottery numbers, or when to get married.

“Then gamblers started asking about the World Cup.”

Mani already has a fanclub from his days as a regular old fortune-teller’s pet.

Ali, a 31-year-old customer, said he was having financial problems and wanted to know when his luck would improve.

After burning incense under pictures of Hindu gods, Muniyappan said Ali’s fortunes would turn in 14 days.

“I’ve come to him before to know when my luck will change,” Ali said. “I believe in him and the bird.”

But not all onlookers were happy with Mani’s World Cup pick.

“I’m disappointed because I want Spain to win,” said Jimmy Wong, a 20-year-old student.

“Now I’m not sure which team to bet on.”

A crowd of soccer fans leans forward as Mani, Singapore’s World Cup-forecasting parakeet, creeps out of his small wooden cage and chooses between two white cards — one hiding the flag of the Netherlands, the other Spain.

If the bird’s many new believers are right, Holland will win its first World Cup championship Sunday. Mani grabbed a card in his beak Friday and flipped it over to reveal the Dutch flag.

The 13-year-old parakeet has become a local celebrity after its owner, M. Muniyappan, claimed Mani accurately forecast the World Cup’s four quarterfinal games and Spain’s semifinal victory over Germany.

“He’s a special bird,” Muniyappan said.

Mani joins Paul the octopus, who has correctly predicted the winner of every World Cup match played by Germany, as overnight stars as interest in soccer’s biggest tournament peaks and gamblers look for any edge to pick winners.

Muniyappan, an 80-year-old fortuneteller, said Mani has helped him predict the future for five years at a table in front of a restaurant in the Little India neighborhood, but this year’s World Cup is the first time the parakeet has attempted to forecast the outcome of sports competitions.

“People usually want help picking the lottery numbers, or when to get married,” said Muniyappan, who was born in India and moved to Singapore in 1953. “Then gamblers started asking about the World Cup.”

Muniyappan said about 30 people a day now pay for his psychic powers, up from about 10 a day before Mani shot to fame.

Singapore’s ethnic Chinese, Malay and Indian populations, especially the older generations, often seek out fortunetellers for advice about health or their children’s marriage and job prospects.

For 10 Singapore dollars ($7), Muniyappan and Mani can see into your future. Ali, 31, said he was having financial problems and wanted to know when his luck would improve. After burning incense under pictures of Hindu gods, Muniyappan said Ali’s fortunes would turn in 14 days.

About: Mani The Parrot

Mani the Parakeet or Mani the Parrot (hatched 1997)  is a Malaysian-born parakeet  who resides in Singapore. He is an an astrologer’s “assistant” in Singapore’s Little India along Serangoon Road, and makes his predictions using a simplified form of cartomancy. Mani became a celebrity in Singapore when he picked the correct winners for all of the 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final ties, as well as the Spain-Germany semi-final.  Mani has predicted that the Netherlands will win the World Cup when they play against Spain in the finals.

According to Singapore’s The New Paper, Mani’s most contentious pick for the World Cup was underdog Netherlands to beat Brazil. His prediction was later proved to be correct. At one point on July 5, 2010, a day before the Uruguay vs Netherlands match, Mani topped Google’s “Hot Searches” in Singapore.

Mani and his owner Muniyapan, an astrologer, used to see an average of 10 customers a day. During the World Cup, this increased to around 10 customers an hour.
